There were also no STDs or STIs back then. Most sexual diseases are fairly modern.
And even if there were some STIs back then, they were fairly localized, as people didn't exactly travel around having random sex.

Due to poverty and lack of technology.

My question is: How did people have sex back then with such terrible hygiene? Did their body odors of pubes, sweat, etc not turn each other off? Honestly, I can’t stand being around a smelly person for more than 30 seconds. I bet not a lot of people shaved their pubic hair either. The weird thing is that people back then seem more perverted than today. If you look at Ancient Greek, Indian, etc art, it seems pretty sexual.

I heard in ancient Pompeii, people were so sex-obsessed that they had penis-shaped everything. From a random statue on the street, to a painting in the house. Everything has a picture of an erect penis. Is it just me or did people seem more perverted back then? I think the spread of Christianity and Islam has tamed people a little bit ?
Have you considered that maybe in ancient times people accepted these smells and conditions as normal? Have you ever heard of pheromones? Sweat and pubic hair biologically carry pheromones. It is the modern thinking that tries to erase and make disgusting the way the body naturally works.

It is not healthy to remove pubic hair, in case you weren't aware. This is simply done because of p0rn. Those movies are made up fakery and influence how real people interact and what they expect of each other. Very unrealistic and unhealthy expectations.

It is perplexing to think that you might believe that one is somehow obligated to mimic what they see in movies especially when it is very unhealthy.

Pinkerton detective agency dudes & Pony Express dudes traveled around a lot. Sometimes they stopped in the town bawdy house or saloon, for a poke...
The ladies usually had a bathtub in their rooms.

Part of the glands function was/is actually to attract mates but we got used to artifical tastes and smells and told what was supposed to be good/bad, clean/unclean. In the 50s women were told to douche with Clorox, it was marketed to women and advertised as one of it's purposes.

We need to get away from this idea that natural bodies and scents are gross. No not unbathed smell, but trying to shame and rid ourselves of normal smells is kind of silly, especially if we are engaged in close contact that makes us heat up and sweat, yes sweat smells like sweat and the places there are more sweat glands release more odors. No wonder people can't date anymore.
That's 1 reason they invented clothes pins...plug nose- no smell...

That's because it was men who created the art, seldom women.

My guess is, women were in the position of being able to choose their mates. The largest, strongest, kindest, most respectable, and/or best providers... and the cleanest and nicest-smelling... were more acceptable to many women, even back then. Men were a lot less choosy. And too, many men took the hint and tried to be those things. And they would even go to considerable effort to develop soaps, perfumes etc.... and to acquire them despite their being scarce.

It's an example of why species with two sexes, tended to advance and evolve more progressively than single-sex species. Many of the former were not chosen for reproduction.... and so, many of them tried to take on characteristics that would make them more acceptable as mates.

Missionary position keeps one another's noses away from the most fragrant bits. Some other positions and acts should only be considered when running water is available.

Just because something is natural doesn't mean it's not gross or doesn't smell bad. Poop is natural, doesn't mean it's not gross and doesn't actually smell bad. I do think that people in history were probably more desensitized to some smells, but that doesn't necessarily mean that was a good thing.
