I was the first person to ever be acquitted in the US on grounds of temporary insanity---after killing a member of the family of a famous American. I married a 15 year old, less than half my age, who could speak five languages.
I was appointed to diplomatic posts by two presidents. I was a general at Gettysburg, where I should have been court-martialled for insubordination. I lost a leg in that battle, and the smashed bone is on display in a national museum. The story of my life has been written by a well-known Australian author.
"Vacation", huh? They wouldn't let you have your laptop in your cell is more like it.
Okay, sticking with the Civil War...
This Union General had this to say about the behavior of his troops in Virginia:
"No goths or vandals ever had less respect for the lives and property of friends and foes and henceforth we ought never hope for any friends in Virginia." A year later this same general authorized military police to shoot soldiers engaging in looting and vandalizing Southern property, saying "This demoralizing and disgraceful practice of pillage must cease, else the country will rise on us and justly shoot us down like dogs and wild beasts."

Staying in the Civil War mode ....
I'm a colonel in Union Army and involved in little known battle after which one I was charged and court martial for a conduct of my troops after the battle.
During court martial procedures I was promoted to brigadier general.
Who am I ????
