I was a major US publishing figure, and founded what is to this day one of the best known publishing houses. I was also a very popular figure, appearing regularly on a network TV show. I wrote a regular column in a popular magazine, the title of which used my name as a play on words. In public school, was a friend of one of America's best known composers. My mother was the heir to a tobacco fortune. I married a minor actress, who was the cousin of one of the biggest stars in show business. After my death, my widow married a political heavyweight.

From my house I'll try a random shot, let's throw all the cards over and line up behind Bennett Cerf.

I was born in Canada, made a living as a fur trapper, got stabbed by a woman I was raping. I had two wives whom I bought, although the legal status of the marriages was dubious, and eventually hired myself out as a guide and native relations expert to western explorers. I was crappy at those jobs, so they switched me to cook where I was praised as competent.

After that the rest of my life was spotty employment, three more wives...and what should have been eternal obscurity. I am rescued from that by the deeds of one of my wives.

How about making this one degree of separation?

My partner and I were the first two white men that Charbonneau and the rest of the Lewis and Clark expedition encountered on their return trip. Before the expedition continued on its return journey we talked one of the party into joining us. After splitting from us he became the first white man to see Yellowstone's geysers. My partner was born in PA in 1775. I grew up in Boonesboro, KY.

Who am I?
