The Real Eisenhower: Planning to Win Nuclear War - CommonDreams.org
Stanford University Press Blog: Eisenhower Unmasked

Quote:
He describes Eisenhower’s Cold War policy as one, “that put anticommunist ideology above human life, made by a man who would 'shoot your enemy before he shoots you'; a man who believed that the U.S. could 'pick itself up from the floor' and win the war, even though 'everybody is going crazy,' as long as only 25 or 30 American cities got 'shellacked and nobody got too 'hysterical.'”

Dude with all due respect I wish you would start a thread by putting in your own opinions and conculsions. It's hard to figure out what exactly this is about and I and other don't like to click on threads.

But I did briefly for this one. My only comment is that Eishenhower, to his credit, was president during 8 years of relative peace and prosperity and cold war policies remained the status quo, which had started under Truman after world war 2.

Also, Eishenhower "fired" Patton at the conclusion of WW2 (or, essentially, put him in his place) for suggesting that which the article suggests - starting a war with the USSR. That contradicts your articles conclusions.

Commondreams is a hack site.
Funny how this madman Eisenhower managed to go 8 years and never started a nuclear war. But let's not let actual history get in the way....go link to a commondreams article about how misunderstood Stalin was.

So what is the point here? Eisenhower was right. By acting the way he did, to plan and plan to win, he kept us out of war. Too many people forget that true professional soldiers regard war as a last resort, but planning for such a war as a first priority.

I wholeheartedly agree with the poor "misunderstood Stalin" comment. When you deal with madmen, it is best to let them know you have a bigger club in your hand than they do. This goes doubly so when you look at the WWII statistics of how many Russians died in the war, vs. the few U.S. soldiers (and handful of civilians) who died in that same war. The Soviet willingness for all-out war that decimated their own was amply proven.

It's always interesting to find out how US Presidents viewed nuclear warfare, because they used to hold this black briefcase with codes to launch a nuclear strike.

Hmm....do you really know how Eisenhower viewed nuclear war or are you just going by some persons disjointed view in a blog on a VERY biased website?

Seriously, link to something by a respected historian using first sources. Taking commondreams at face value is like getting all your truth by listening to Rush Limbaugh every day.

On the scale of accuracy and trustworthiness...commondreams falls somewhere well below Fox News. (ouch)

All leaders were faced with how to win a nuclear war by surviving one. I remember that most people including scientist thought it would come. Look at their nuclear clock some time.

I still see a great potential of a nuclear device being used in the world today. Looking at the lost nuclear material from the Russians alone and the radical religious groups all over the world I fear it is not “will it happen but when we will have to live through it”.

Eisenhower was well know for letting his staff plan and at times set in motion the issues which would have been political issues. His history looked like just golf until years after his death.
