The 60's, dude. Man on the moon, civil rights, The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, The Grateful Dead, The Supremes, Abbie Hoffman, Women's rights, the environmental movement, Woodstock, gay rights...
At least it was an exciting decade.
Definently the 80's I graduated high school, got a job, and loved the music, although the other era's have the good and the bad the 80's is still my fav.

I will cast another vote for the 60s. Even though the modern civil rights movement began in the 50s, it was in the 60s that much of the groundwork was established to start the process of breaking down racism, bigotry, and chauvinism. Prior to that there was not much of social or legal consequence for displaying those awful traits as there is now.
Life was inexpensive,still had blue laws.You could move around at will without getting hit with violence.I did better with a $1.50 per hour.The area I worked Albany Ave with Bellco had areas of problem but not bad enough to be concerned,you now put your life on the line to enter this area in Hartford,Ct.Everything was much more pristine,towns cleaner and much nicer than the overgrown mess we now have. Sidewalks were rolled up at 9:00 pm.Most people today would go nuts with this type of life.Life today is mostly greed and material things.You could go camping and leave everything out and it was never touched,today gone in a heartbeat.Not nice at all today.
I said the 60s, but there are things to like about every decade. I like the 60s because of the cars and freedom. If only I could go back. I would cherish every moment much more than I did then if you knew what would be awaiting you in the coming decades.
I think you need to clarify by best for what racial group. I doubt any of American Indian heritage would pick any time before the coming of the White man to the Americas. Further, I would be surprised at any African Americans who picked a time before the 1960s and the passage of the Civil Rights Act...
1) No more Soviet Union (Remember A-bomb drills?)
2) Phenomenal economy and rise of the internet
3) No major wars or terrorist attacks
4) Alternative rock
5) CHEAP GAS!
And then I graduated high school (in 2000) and it was never the same.
There was an optimism ten years ago that has evaporated completely. Americans are now angry, depressed, anxious and pessimistic about the future. News of "the decline of America" is common. For someone who remembers the good years so vividly, it's extremely frustrating to watch.
BTW. The 50s were awesome for their own reasons too.
