Thank you, sincerely. What was the land we know as England, before it became England? Was it included in the claim of Dal Riata?
It's complicated.
What's now England and Wales was called Britian by the Romans. When the Romans pulled out Germans invaded from the continent and took over most of Britian. Because many of these invaders were Angles the area became known as Angle-Land then England. For a long time there was no political unity but a bunch of small kingdoms----Wessex, Northumbria, Cornwall and so on. England wasn't really unified until the reign of the king Cnut, a Dane. The somewhat unified England that William invaded was the offshoot of Cnut's kingdom.
Dal Riata was a kingdom established in Scotland by Irish invaders, I don't think they had any claims to England.

Dal Riata has surfaced in DNA testing. They are finding subgroups in the Celtic DNA. Since some clans have traditions of descent from Dal Riata, it could get interesting when they get more information.
From what I understand, Brittan and Breten were two different terms and peoples, is that accurate? Breten named after the family de/le Brechin or something similar from Flanders, whom a decendant, was also accused with the Hugh deMorville of murdering the Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Beckett in 1170/72 time period. Can anyone confirm that?
My first thoughts on William the basturd, was I hoped he blacked somebody's eye for calling him mean names, then I thought, what if he was a rightful heir in the first place??
myself, I probably have plenty of nicknames, spider smasher might be one, stands with fist, purse full o rocks. lol

Can you tell me how to contact those who are conducting this DNA survey? or direct me to where you found out about it, I want to submit my mtDNA to it, Thanks!
BTW, I understand that DNA is predominantly linked only in the Male Y chromosome, but I also understand that in the teeth of every male is the mtDNA sequence of his female ancestry.mtDNA is called Mitochondrial DNA, which is the only sequence females have as a signature. This is just my understanding of it.
