CHICAGO - The faded papers hint at stark details in the lives of Nazi concentration camp inmates.

Letters secretly carried by children through the sewers of Warsaw, Poland, during the 1944 uprising. A 1933 card from a Dachau camp commander outlining strict rules for prisoner mail. A 1943 letter from a young man, who spent time in Auschwitz, to his parents.

This is actually something that I would like to see.

I am halfway through Chaim Herzog's autobiography. He had a cousin that was trying to make it home to her mother in Paris and was stopped, detained and on her way to Auschwitz. She wrote a letter with no envelope and threw it out the window. The letter stated that she did not know if she would be able to write again but she wanted her mother to know she was going to be ok and she would come home. She did not.

At any rate, he says that this was common and that the farmers would pick up the letters and deliver them. This is huge in more than a couple of ways.
