Is it based on the book by the same name? (Can't remember the author's name - she was female - and the book isn't anywhere near me at the moment) I loved the book, anyway, in case it is the same, right up until the end. Can't spoil it for someone who hasn't read it/seen the movie, but it was horrible since you really got a feeling for the characters, and then... Well, you know.
One of the best books I've ever read. If there's a movie out, I'm definetively (spelling?) going to try and see it.

It seems to be an Italian movie from the 1970s. Here's a review I found.
Quote:
It was advertised as "The first motion picture based on historical facts about the rise and revolt of slavery in America." It became one of the most reviled and misunderstood films of its time. Written, edited, produced and directed by Gualtiero Jacopetti and Franco Prosperi, this epic recreation of the American slave trade atrocities was both condemned as depraved exploitation and acclaimed as an unprecedented cry of Black anguish and rage. The Detroit Chronicle hailed it as "a graphic, moving, nerve-paralyzing film." Legendary film critic Pauline Kael called it "the most specific and rabid incitement of the race war." Three decades cannot diminish GOODBYE UNCLE TOM's impact or quiet its controversy.
I own it and recently saw it (since so much controversy swirled around it). It's a DVD I burned from a copy owned by a college professor.
It is an italian movie that was forcefully banned in the United States since the seventies because some claim that it is too acurrate to the true horrors of the American South during slavery. Most people either love it or hate it.
Now that I've seen the movie, I would like to ask other history buffs who have seen the movie (which is linked above, although the real movie is just over 2 hours) if they find it accurate or telling of that time in American history... historically speaking.
Well, the link to the movie is above... Check it out if you have the time (and patience). It is quite shocking... but yet you know that it is true. A must see for history buffs or those interested in the truths about slavery in the American South...
Feel free to reply with commentary.

I believe after it was banned, theaters that showed it were fined and had to surrender the film. I'm not sure if anyone served jailtime or anything... But I was told that it incited several riots.
I think the penalty was on par with showing porn in public theaters, but I'm not sure what the punishment is for that...

Has anyone here seen it yet?
I don't think it was banned, just heavily edited.
I have seen it, it was partt of the Mondo Cane collection released some 5 years ago. By the way, Africa Addio is much more controversia (a movie from the same directors)
It's very graphic and sometimes simply revolting, but gives you a good picture of the antebellum South
