You know how we've always heard about how powerful some of the Central and South Americans tribes were i.e. the Aztecs and Toltecs before them in Mexico, the Mayan of Central America and the Incas of South America and so i got to thinking about which North American tribes and/or nations were the most powerful in America/Canada?
A few that come to mind are the Navajo, Apache, Sioux, Comanche, Nez Perce, Iroquois, Ottawa's, Cherokee and many many more that i'm not thinking of.
I think the [mostly] Sioux victory at Little Big Horn gave the Sioux leaders alot of standing and power among all North American tribes.
I think that your right about that Capt. Dan as i hear native tribes down here in New Mexico still boast about that victory by the northern Sioux on the local radio from time to time.
I also wonder about the Mississippi Mound Builders as some of their dwellings look simular to Aztecs/Mayan city dwellings/temples in Mexico/Central America as i wonder if they had large cities like they did ......

Yea, the Hopewell culture was comparable in size and power to the Aztecs, Incas and Mayans.
I see that there are currently some 30 mounds as that's just incredible that the average American knows more about the Aztecs/Incas etc. than of this tribe/culture here in the States.
The Comanche, once they came out of the mountains onto the Southern Plains and acquired the horse, drove the Apache into the deserts of New Mexico, stymied Spanish expansion into Texas and nearly caused the Texas Republic to be stillborn. At their height they owned 2/3 of Texas up through Oklahoma into Colorado down into eastern New Mexico. Their language was the lingua franca of trade from Mexico to the Dakotas and they were recognized as the premier horse breeders/traders of the Great Plains.
