It sounds from your required parameters that you are primarily interested in non-fiction Civil War books, but I was wondering if you're familiar with the great "historical novels" of Mike & Jeff Shaara? This father and son team have a gret Civil War trilogy out there, began by Mike with "The Killer Angels" and then followed up and completed by his son Jeff with "Gods & Generals" and then "The Last Full Measure."
The great thing about these novels is that they are steeped in facts, like letters written by real liefe civil war generals, but then are fleshed out in a story form. So the reader gets his dose of true facts and events from the war, but in an entertaining fashion--a lot more fun and not nearly as dry as a lot of non-fiction work.
And of course, two of those books have beenmade into movies: "GettysBurg" was spawned by "Killer Angels" (great flick!) and then we had "Gods & Generals" (boring, too long flick!) LOL.
.......and they say that a film version of "Last Full Measure" is on the way but I've been hearing that for a couple years now.

The plans for the "Last Full Measure" movie was canceled due to the dismal box office performance (and critical rating) of the "Gods and Generals" movie. There are currently no plans that I have heard of for a making of this film.
