I'm not sure about the box itself, but the Knights of Honor were a society that was dedicated to protecting it's members in case of sickness or death. Dues were collected and the money was used to support sick members or provide for widows and orphans of dead members. I guess it was sort of like an early 19th Century form of insurance. The order has completely died out, but they were big in the midwest during their heyday. Perhaps the box was where the dues/donations were stored?
You had mentioned in your other thread that it looked like there was a space for a gavel. If that's the case, it's most likely a case for a ceremonial gavel. Fraternal organizations have all sorts of items like that which are often given as gifts to presiding officers and whatnot.
