.... How many poker newbs/flat out morons does one typically encounter? They're everywhere on the sites, but I'm not sure if any of these people are the types to actually go to the Bellagio or anything.
Online poker is a lot harder. On the sites, typically two or three donks per table...
In real life, probably two or three people are profitable...assuming 9.
In real life, many people are just looking for a good time. Many haven't played a hand for months...
Also, it depends on the stakes. Mid stakes are easier....low stakes tend to be harder because people are willing to gamble more. Mid stakes, even the donks will be keeping tight, so you have more of an opportunity to control things.
One of the best pieces of poker advice I've ever heard is that "If you don't know who the donk is, the donk is you."
Depends on where you play, too. The off-strip rooms are more casual & laid back, but they're mostly filled with locals, many of which are retirees that play very, very tight.
What dub dub said above about mid stakes is true. If you sit down at a small stakes table, between the crazy suck-outs and the rake, you can expect to (at best) break even, unless you get a great run of cards. People chase everything at those tables.
