I've had a passing interest in becoming an operator for many years but have never followed through. Where and how does one begin?

I'm not a ham radio operator, but I operate a "real" AM broadcast station in western South Carolina.

Go out to ARRLWeb: ARRL Home Page and search for clubs in your area using your zip code. These local clubs have members that are so very interested in helping folks become licensed. They usually have routine meetings and testing events. There is a book called "Getting Started with Ham Radio" that is very good. I believe that they offer that book on ARRL. The license manual is also on that site. Both are very good books to obtain. Sometimes these are available in your local library.

I took a lot of practice tests on the site to pass my test. They were very helpful.

Good luck and let me know via DM if I can help further.

Extra Class license here. It's a lot of fun, I enjoy QRP and digital more than anything else, have my DXCC all with 100 watts and a dipole, WAS, WAC, VUCC. Very active on satellites. Biggest thrill was when I talked to an astronaut on the International Space Station with a one watt ht from my patio.

Yes you dont need much power if the conditions are right!

I think the lowest amount of power you need to make the trip IS THE BEST WAY as you wont bother someone else.. (Or have less of a chance to that way)

Yep, I are one!
Our local club is very active in licensing new Hams, with classes and testing sessions every other month. There are 5 to 10 new Hams each session, as well as license upgrades.
I suppose someday I will go for the Extra class, but for now General is all I need.
Perhaps after I get the 40+ foot tower I have put up next summer, and get better antennas, I will be active on more bands, and have an incentive to advance to Extra.

Extra class here, and as it turns outs now I'm just about 4 years off of QCWA. I'm more casual, never been a paper chaser, but enjoy the challenge of reaching out with 100 watts and some wire.

One thing I've noticed over the years-hamfests used to go on all day, sometimes all weekend, now our local clubs do them for 4 hours on a Saturday morning, and nobody bothers to go anyways. We used to have all kinds of fun at ours. One year I bought a Ten Tec Omni that I tried out, using the railroad tracks out side the depot where the hamfest was being held. Where is that sense of adventure these days?
