When I enlisted we were still eating "C" Rats. About a year later we switched over to MRE's. I wish we would have stayed with C Rats. All I ever ate was peanut butter, tuna, and pound cake. Loved the pound cake. They still had the 5 pack of Marlboro's in them. Since I didn't smoke, I could trade the cigarettes for my beloved pound cake :-) Yummy.

Ironic, no? given your current profession.

Just kidding.

OP- uh no, save for the apocalypse.

I've been eating MREs ever since joining in 2000. They've gotten better over the years, but I wish I was around for the days they had cigarettes. Those, plus a beer or three, would make it much more enjoyable to be out on patrol.

Oh, yes, I loved those "C,s"!
I won't discuss (cuss) the "triple lie" as we called them. "Meal"; no. "Ready"; no. "Eat"; I would rather not.
Of course, if one is hungry enough, nearly anything can be choked down...

Had C rats in boot camp but that was about it. Still have a John Wayne on my key chain.

Spent MANY years not eating MRE's. Sometimes you just can't help it if the civilian snacks run out. I usually like the stuff people tend to not eat and throw away. Too much sodium. yuck.

I hate to eat anything that people describe as "not too bad". What degree of bad does it have to be for you to not eat it?

When I was a lad , we would have free run of the local military reservation and never had to carry a lunch-we always found plenty of C-rats out there. Sometimes the cigs were a bit dry and the tootsie rolls were never edible but everything else was golden.

later, while I was traveling in the Alaska bush, I carried MRE's with me for lunch as most of the villages do not have a restaurant. Abou the same taste but easier to pack.

Same here (1981). I think in about 1982 they started with MRE's. I liked the C better than the first mre's they came out with. I remember the freeze dried pork patty.

When I first met my late H, he kept a stash of MREs in the pantry for quick dinners (he worked nights). I never really figured out what the appeal was, but some of the meat products weren't too bad with lots of catsup. He got used to good home cooking pretty quickly though.
