I have one of those open-top, 2-person kayaks I take on calm water sometimes during the summer.
My mother introduced me to kayaking when my boys were babies. She had a normal closed kayak and would stick my younger son in front of her in the hole so just his shoulders and head stuck out and my older son would sit in front of me. We had so much fun and everyone we passed by thought the babies (properly life-vested and tethered to us securely of course) were adorable.
I love kayaking, but unfortunately, I couldn't make it out this summer. I just go to a local livery that rents them out and kayak the river. I've thought about buying my own, but I don't know if I go out enough to justify spending the money on one.
Although my kayaking adventures have mainly just been limited to the rivers around my neck of the woods (hence, nothing too exciting), I did take a kayaking trip on the Sandusky River and Lake Erie. We started on this little tributary that spills into the Sandusky River and from there, paddled our way onto Lake Erie. It was a blast!
That looks like a good fish your friend caught there Jambo. I'd be nervous fishing in a kayak, what if a big fish is hooked and it drags you out to sea?? LOL
Kayaks are fun and now is a good time to buy a used one football45013. Keep looking on craigslist you might get lucky, we did.
He was at the top end of Tampa Bay, it took him 2 hours to get to this point in the pic and a good half mile from initial strike.. He would love one of those new kayaks that are devoted to fishing.
We got a kayak as a Christmas present to ourselves a month ago. We've been out several times and are learning the waters around here, mainly the Intercoastal here on the Gulf side of FL. It's been so much fun, the kayak is a pedal one and is easy to use going against currents and wind. Our first day out was with 20mph winds head on and it was no problem, we just had to try it out.
We were kayaking around a local bay last week and watching people at dock and on moorings decorating their boats for the Christmas Boat parade. We beached on a small island afterwards in the pic below.
We've sailed and canoed thoughout the years, our favorite place to be is on the water and we have so many places to explore here.
I'm jealous Jean ji up here on Cape Cod the ocean water is about 40 something and soon enough ice will be forming on the ponds. The air is in the 30's. Kayaks are put away until next year just like the bicycle is.
We're having a cold spell this week, the water is 65 degrees but today's high temp will only be 63. We'll wait for temps in the 70 and sunshine before going out again, which won't be until next week. It will be good for biking if the winds aren't too strong. We really should learn to ride against the wind instead of having it at our backs when we start out. Same with kayaking. :-)
