This spring it seems people have felt the need to place the entire contents of their shed into the dumpster at the office. I've seen some things in there that looked like it was still pretty good, a nice set of luggage, about 100' of good garden hose, a brand new mail box with a new post, but yesterday I found a Dyson vacuum cleaner that couldn't have been more than a couple of years old. What treasures have you found in the dumpster
Ex garbage man here. I could go on about things found in dumpsters and garbage cans, but I'll focus on my favorites. Those would be tax write off time for stores and move out time for college kids.
With the stores, they would throw out old stock and write it off. TV's, clothes, boots, stereos. Most of the time the electronic devices worked. I got a nice car stereo one year. Hooked it up in the garbage truck in a tackle box turned stereo enclosure. We'd also get flannels and boots. Again, they may have had a cosmetic blemish or two, but they were used for work so it didn't matter.
College move out time was the best. Those kids (Gonzaga University) would throw out everything. TV's, VCRs, furniture, porn, bongs, clothes, microwaves. It didn't matter. They didn't want to take it back home, so it went in the dumpster.
It's amazing some of the things people will throw away.

You should have set up a shop down the road and sold it all back to them....at triple the price of course.
It is CRAZY the stuff people toss out or just don't care about.
My uncle works as a custodian at a affluent high school and the stuff he finds discarded is a shame. New sneakers, coats and all manner of clothing, gym bags, book bags the occasional electronic device. They all go in the lost and found and it is rare anyone comes to claim them. After a certain time he keeps them. I got a brand new pair of Nikes that way.
We are such a wasteful society and it is getting worse when it is actually cheaper to buy something new than fix the old one.
I did a little dumpster diving when I was younger. Most interesting thing I found (although not the most valuable) was a whole mess of brand new heat shrink tubing (used in electronic assembly). Kept a few strands and sold the rest off to a liquidator.
I never did this but that sounds like something I want to try one day, so where would I go do that. Is it legal? I see a lot of posts on recycling and I am a member of a yahoo group called freecycle which basically is a site where you post the things you don't want and people go pick them up, you can also post on it things you want and people could respond back and give them to you. It's pretty cool just to watch the emails and see what people post.
When I lived in another apt I watched a young girl about the same age as me and size throw a bunch of nice stylish clothes in the dumpster . also a whole load of jewelry as well . my son and I both climbed in there and I did not have to buy clothes for almost a whole year . she was just a cussin at her boyfriend I figured they broke up with each other .some of that jewelry was awesome and I wore a lot of it to work and sold some pieces off . the girls at work were just astounded at what I found .
I live in a neighborhood of small apartment and condo complexes. There is always someone moving. I can see 3 dumpsters from my windows. I've gotten many decent things from these dumpsters. Most of our small furniture came from this source. We don't care about fancy furniture and don't want to spend much money for furniture. When we are done with it it goes back out next to the dumpster for the next person to use it.
I have found three nice tall cat trees from the dumpsters. My cats love them!!
My grandpa works at apartment complexs, and he would always bring over all kinds of treasures from tennants that left everything behind. Even scored an old big screen tv.
When I lived in a high-rise, my neighbors were constantly throwing away beautiful, new or nearly-new things. They would just leave things in the basement for the porters to take out on garbage day. Anyone who wanted them was free to help themselves. One day I snagged a brand-new camel leather sectional sofa just like the one below. Another time I got a new Eureka canister vacuum cleaner that was still in the box. Another time I got a 20" Panasonic TV.
