Go to the country. After studying a foreign language for 10+ years, that is what helped me the most. See if you can get your job to transfer you. Or maybe you can go to school or take a course there and see if you can write it off as an education expense. Studying and talking to native speakers IMO is not going to help very much. That's why I still can't speak French very well.
Nothing beats going to a country where it is spoken. A meet up group is a good second choice. A third and fourth choice is to listen to tv or video broadcasts (particularly the news) or play movies in that language (turn off the subtitles), and to read books and magazines in that language
Absolutely agree - nothing can be better than going to a country where this language is spoken. And most important is not to have a lot of practice but to feel a language and to hear how it sounds.
Learn words related to subjects you find interesting - e.g. names of planets and astrological phenomena if you're into astronomy. Even if you'll likely rarely to never use them, it's good for keeping morale up.
I learned two foreign languages over the past 30 years, and it helped that I lived in countries that used those languages. But, there are steps one can take if you can't make an overseas move.
Listening comprehension comes before good speaking skills develop. Thus, if I was learning another language, I would get music in that language (with lyrics, of course), that I could listen to a lot while doing other things. You have to train your ear for the sounds.
If there are native speakers of your language choice living in the area, try to hang out with them somehow. I used to volunteer at a local 'literacy council', offering free English lessons and assistance to Chinese-speakers. I was also learning one of the Chinese dialects at the time, so that helped.
Yes I am. I appreciate all the replies. Thank you!
