A lot of people collect comic books or Star Wars/Trek items and they are called "losers."

But it's "cool" when that person collects vinyl records or anything to do with the latest music.

It's also "cool" if that person collects sports-related items for teams they never played on and will never play for, but if that person likes fantasy items such as elves, fairies, trolls, ogres, wizards, knights, etc., that person is a "loser."

Why is that?

Because some of those things remind people of what they did when they were children and playing. Things that for a lot of us older folks left behind with our childhood.

It is 100% perspective.

Go to one of the 'Cons' and ask if comics, D&D, etc.. stuff is "cool" to collect. Ask again about sports memorabilia, music stuff, stamps, etc...

Meanwhile, try not to get lost in the massive crow of people if you hit one of the bigger conventions.

The only people who place those labels are those who are voicing their Specific and individual opinions.

^^^

True it is about perspective.

Any hobby is a good/cool one to those who are enjoy it.

I love gardening and some think that is boring. That is fine by me. Bottom line is do what you like and don't worry what people think.

Yes, it most assuredly is "perception"!
My mother collected and repaired dolls.
Some guy once accused her of being in her second (or third) childhood, so she showed him a few bisque and porcelain dolls she had. The combined market value of the dolls (a small portion of the total collection) was several thousand dollars.
Kinda blew his "childish" statement right out of the water!
Do any of you know what the first Superman comic book is worth in today's market?
How about Playboy #1?
How about the original Barbie or GI Joe, in mint condition?
Before you label anybody a "loser" or "childish" because of their hobby or collection, think a bit.

I think it comes down to the people you are talking to. The people I hang out with would NEVER call anyone a "loser" for things they collect. They might not collect it themselves, but to insult someone for what they enjoy is just silly.

It could be an age range thing. I only know one loser right now and it's not for what he collects, lol.

The biggest factor that makes hobby uncool , is when grown adults start to role play, in costume.

????Re enacting medieval war scenes. Acting out some witch craft, or civil war battles. Dressing like a baby doll????? Raised eyebrows!

That guy, with vintage vinyl , posing with a dusty record player is not necessarily cool. But you won't likely see him lugging around records and a player.

Dedicating so much time on a hobby is not what all people can understand. Some people have hobbies, and not realize it.

Perhaps the real problem is that we live in a society where people think it's okay to criticize and mock other people with different interests from them. When I was in high school, guys who played musical instruments instead of playing on sports teams were bullied.
