I know, the only nationwide alternative is JoAnn, but I HATE JoAnn!!!! The store is cluttered up with so much craft stuff, and I don't know about any JoAnn stores near you, but the one here is just awful!
Stuff is all mixed up, not properly labeled, the staff don't know much about sewing and less about fabric. I asked the price of a pattern after hunting all over for a sign or tag, and was told "We can't possibly keep up with the pattern prices! You'll just have to take it up front and have it scanned."
She told me I would have to do that with each and every unmarked pattern. I left the patterns there and left the store.
Quilting stores don't count. At least where I live, they are all uber expensive and carry the exact same fabrics I used to find at Hancock.
Have folks gone online? What alternatives are you using now that Hancock is gone?

My wife buys online but also at a place much larger than Hancock, requiring us to do a day or overnight road trip of about 3 hours. It's Fabric Depot in Portland, Oregon. We always do a few other things while there, but the first stop is for her to get her fabrics, and usually timed with one of their 40% off sales.
There is a "discount fabric" store but it's not discounted by much and is heavy on upholstery fabrics and other heavy brocade type stuff. Lots of costume stuff not very discounted. Not a lot of regular cloth. Though I guess I will have to check them out again. I need curtains.
What online sources is your wife using? I've been reluctant. I'm a toucher. If I can't see and feel a fabric and see how it drapes, how see through it is (or is not), I'm not comfortable.
Our Hancock closed as well but we have a Hobby Lobby (& JoAnns) but my favorite is a small, local, family owned store called the Mill Outlet. When you walk in there you know they take everything about sewing very seriously.
I remember going in as a little girl with my mom. My mom was an amazing seamstress & made a lot of our clothing all the way through high school.
I buy at joannes but hobby lobby is also available but truly don't like their prices . yep my grandma was an amazing seamstress as well and she made clothes for herself but fabric was less expensive back then ,.
