I do a day trip every Saturday. It can be from an hour one way or eight
hours one way. As long as I have more time to photograph than the combined
to and from time it's a day trip. This Saturday it will be to Salem, VA. Then I'll follow
the NS line to Bluefield, WV then head back home. A short trip this time at 485
miles and about eight hours of windshield time. Other times it's just get in the car
and ride and wherever I end up is the place to be!

8 hrs driving 1-way & you still just do a 1-day trip?! If that's worth it to you, great, but any place that takes almost 3 hrs 1-way at the least to me & I might as well spend a night there & return home the next day. The farthest I've ever driven 1-way & NOT spent the night was 1.5 - 2 hrs. By the way, anything that's longer than 2 hrs away & I used to rent a car so all that wear & tear isn't on my own car. (I've stopped renting cars the last few times I drove 1.5-2hrs.)

So what do you do, leave the house at 2 AM or something so you arrive at your destination at around 10am, but then you won't be able to stay long since it's another 8 hrs back.

I've flown to another state (here in California to Las Vegas) for just the day once, but that was flying.

It varies with the time of year. Around now I might do these things: Mow, paint, fix, clean, sleep, bike ride, kayak, do charity/community service things, visit Dad, drive north to look at fall colors, eat bacon, work on my book, visit friends, go shooting, have a bonfire, throw axes or atlatl, close the swimming pool, fix cars, build interior storm windows, play a game on the computer, watch a movie, attend a jazz performance, walk the dog, play fetch with the dog, try to fix the snowblower, go shopping, list some things on E-bay, do some laundry, clean the bird cages, play with the birds, donate blood, go explore the city, talk to some neighbors, clean the garage, put summer clothing in storage bins, decorate for Halloween,

I think that about sums it up at this time of year. If we have more money available than we do right now, I might add some more things to the list.

The eight hour one way has only happened a couple of times. Not
because I wanted to, but if I wanted to photograph a place before it
was demolished I had to go for it when the chance was right. On
something like that I would leave about 10:00 PM to get there before
sunrise and get in.

Tomorrow sunrise is about 7:25 AM so I'll be leaving about 3:30 AM
and hope that leaves me enough time to find my spot and get set up?
I'll shoot until dark or later then drive back home.

I very seldom have more than one free day which is why I do day trips.
Even if I had a couple of days, I hate spending good money on a hotel
just to sleep when I can catch a few winks in the car when needed.

When it stops being fun is when I'll call it quits...

- movies
- fairs, arts & crafts events, & festivals of interest
- farmers' markets
- live performing arts: Musicals, dinner/theatres, figure skating shows, pro tennis matches (not really concerts)
- dining out, but I get takeout a whole lot more!
- go to shopping malls, very nearby or as far as 1 - 1.5 hrs away
- browse bookstore
- museums - I wish there were more around here
- amusement park (Disneyland, Knott's Berry Farm, Universal Studios, etc.)
- day in San Diego (2 hrs from me)
- day trip consisting of any of the above
- morning walking - try to at least 2 days/wk
- STAY HOME ALL DAY - at times I do this too & it's nice as well! I can keep myself busy at home for sure. (I don't do this on both days of the weekend)

However, I'd do more weekend getaways if I had the extra money! Also, since I've lived in Southern CA my entire life, I've been running out of places to go. There have been a many of free days when I'm wracking my brain wondering where to go. I don't have a lot of money to spend either.

the same Dude, I also do this type of Extra activity as well as Social Activity.

I'm retired too, due to health reasons.
This weekend, I'm desperately trying to get some stitching done on a Christmas stocking for my grandson. My husband is gone hunting and I'm having a grand time with the house all to myself. Went for supper last night with a good friend, and tonight will treat myself to take out.
