Hey fellow hobby folk,
NOt sure if this is where to post this but I'm going to try since this is about a project I am making, but I'm trying to find cake holders that aren't expensive. Everything I have seen has got $$ on them.
Anyone have suggestions to find a bunch of those whimsical looking cake stands without the glass cover of course.
Thanks!

Its been a while since Ive made one but I used to make them for presents. Each is different cause you never know what youll get for material. Basicly you need a plate or a silver/metal tray and a footed goblet or footed vase. You turn the goblet upside down and glue the bottom/flat part to the bottom of the plate or tray.
Then the fun part comes. Use your imagination or check the web. Theres lots of one of a kind stuff at yard sales etc.
Clear glass plate + short footed ice cream dish.
Cut out paper or cloth posies/roses etc and glue to underside. Paint underside coordinating solid color.
Take cool tissue paper or wrapping paper and decopage to underside.
Old round silver tray + footed metal goblet.
Take old flowered plate and break into pieces. Put pieces back together like puzzle and glue on top of silver tray. You can just do the center and keep the outer silver part or do the whole thing. Break another plate and use pieces on goblet/stand. Grout both. If you get a nice goblet you can leave it plain.
Or you can just break a bunch of plates and do a random mosaic.
If you do a big rectangular tray you might need two bases.

Cecilia, you are a doll! I never thought about making it! Wow. You gave me great ideas especially I need to make more than one and it can get pricey.
My question to you or any one else is where can I get silver plates and silver goblets?

Thanks. I guess you could say my hobby is trash to treasure. I like to make things for other peeps. I keep some but not much.
Sorry. I forget not everybody is wierd like me and keeps a stash of found things. Im like a Magpie I find kewl junk and stash it away for my future projects.
Im talking about silver plate trays. They used to be a pretty common item. A lot of them end up at yard sales and Salvation Army once they get scratched and binged up. Same for silver plate goblets. Nobody wants a lone goblet.
Also base doesnt have to be a goblet. Could be a vase or even a small bowl turned upside down. Could be stacked circles of wood. Or porch parts like the round ball on the post. You have to think outside the box. Heck sometimes the right box could be a base.
Or you can do a tiered one using bud vases and lamp parts and finials.
You can also stack stuff to make a base. Upside down saucer then upside down bowl then right side up plate.

Actually, you aren't as wierd as you think. I collect strange things too. But, I never had the eye for collecting like that for such great creations. I just didn't realize the potential back then.
Plus, I don't have the space to store potential treasures right now, but boy when I'm free to do so, the options are endless! As you have shown me very clearly! You have great creativity and I'm absorbing your posts like a sponge!! keep it coming!!!

If you want cheap and matching, then look at some of the stuff at a party supply store. They will have inexpensive "disposable" serving ware that can be converted to this build. If you prefer the unique look of individual stands (I would personally) haunt yard sales, thrift stores and flea markets.

Thanks, John! I didn't think about the party supply store, but I did think about using the plastic stuff.

Thats a good idea John. I forgot about the party store stuff. Deegers you could do some of the same stuff to a clear Plastic cake plate only more so since its more of a one time deal.. And I think I saw some of those gold and silver and other color lacquered paper mache under plates the last time I was there.
Also dont forget to get the paper doilies and the fancy paper muffin/cupcake liners while youre there.. Dont forget presentation is everything. .
Its nice to know Im not crazy cause I can look at a lampshade and see a birdbath. Once You get started its kinda addictive. Ive had to put a lot of my projects on hold for a while now. I think Im having withdrawl.. Thanks for letting me play with yours.

oooh, that's the kind of vision I want!! You are right, it is addicting.
What are you talking about with paper doilies and fancy paper muffin/cupcake liners? What can I use them for? oh, if you think I'm actually going to use them for cake then this kind of presentation doesn't need that! LOL I'm using them to display flower arrangements!

Well Hell. That opens up a whole nuther can of worms. I just assumed you be puttin cakes on them cake stands. Hence the doilies and muffin liners for your spiffy deserts.
Flower arrangements you say. Hmmmmm. You be wanting pedestals for your posies. Forget the glue use screws. Okay Im thinking. The posies will be taking up most of the top so the emphasis should be on the base and the sides. Also dont have to worry about stuff falling in your food so over embellish here we come. Maybe a shape covered with little stones and then clear coated. You know how some stones look better "wet".
You know what else would make good bases. Those big fat wooden candlesticks that you put fat candles on.
Oh and those little short resin/plastic birdbaths.
And you know wooden boxes wouldnt be a bad idea. The can be decorated too. Or maybe those white storage cubes you use in your closet.
Will these be big flower arrngements or small. Im thinking bases might need to be more "beefy" looking to balance out arrrangements. Got any pics?
