I'm thinking of buying a metal detector and doing a bit of this as a hobby.

Anyone else have some experience with it?

Yes I've owned one since I was a kid, I had a cheap one from Radio Shack, now I've got a Garret with 3 different coils for doing anything from searching for coins in trashy areas to deep detecting. I like going to places around here that I've put in the hours to research. For the most part people are lazy, blow the money on equipment but go to the same beach or school that everyone else has then get bored and in the closet it goes.
As towns grow, city leaders change and highways direct traffic away from areas that were once popular, a little reading can send you to areas that will keep you grinning.

It took some digging, but I knew that I posted on this a long time ago. Hope it helps some.

Yes!!! Great hobby and great unearthing of many hidden treasures! Go for it and be prepared for endless hours of fun!! Just make sure you spend $ on one that can determine the difference between a pull tab and a treasure.
