are you trying to write a sketch to act out or are you try to do an actual stand up act where you tell jokes?

There are a few things you can do.

1. use past and present experiences
2. choose a topic of interest like sport, famous people, politics and such.
3. My favorite - Improv, it may not be what you are looking for as it is not for everyone. RELAX, take a deep breath, and let your mind go blank. Live in the moment of laughter.

What I do is make a not of odd and weird things I experience and see. I write down everything that comes to mind and I mean everything. You never know when something you thought of earlier can be turned into a joke or used in your material.

well, its not always that easy to just write an act. You dont want to just tell jokes, you want to tell a story in a sense. Your act should slowly fade from topic to topic without to many jumps or set up. It needs to roll together smoothly. A good Idea would be to watch some of the older stand up comics and some of the new ones, try to notice how things have changed and how some things have not.

Like I said, writing an act isnt that easy, if it was everyone would be doing it.

Your best bet is to use real life experiences and build off of them. There are also alot of how to articles out there that you should read. Just type in "How to be a stand up comic" How to write a stand up comedy act"
