Pool Cue Maintenance (watch, bit)

I am just your average joe when it comes to playing pool. I play on 3 different leagues. And well since I play a good bit I do own a few cues. Paying to have them maintained is a pain and I am starting to do it myself. I am building a lathe to make tip replacement and shaping easier. Also so I will be able to clean slight nicks out of a shaft. Now my question is: I have watched many people sand a shaft down to remove nicks and imperfections, then they use a liquid to seal the wood and make it glossy again. I know this is some sort or sealer or burnisher... But what to use is my question. This is something that is pust lightly on a cloth and wiped on a spinnign shaft. It dries in a few seconds and nothing more needs done to the wood.

Anyone know what this is that I am looking for?

Could be either shellac or something as simple as paste wax. Either will work well to preserve the wood and seal it. One good brand of the latter is MinWax. They also make other wood finishes.
