NHL Power Rankings for the week of March 19th, 2011. The Vancouver Canucks clinched a playoff berth before anyone in the NHL and have a nine point lead over everyone in the NHL. All of the top ten teams in the Western Conference have a winning record over their last ten games, while 5th place is separated from 9th place by less than two wins. The Eastern Conference is starting to sort itself out, as the Buffalo Sabres and New York Rangers seem to be playoff bound. The Devils finally stumbled, and their dream may be coming to an end shortly. The top teams continue to battle for playoff positions in both conferences, as the races stay as entertaining as ever. Let’s rank all 30 NHL teams.
Article continues to go on and rank each team by points and discuss
All I know is, the Penguins have had Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin and Jordan Staal healthy for one whole game this season, yet they have 90 points. Just something to think about before you laugh at a #5 or #6 seed.
82 games in a season ...... the Leafs just finished up #75 so they have 7 left
Buffalo is currently in the last playoff position with 81 points & 9 games remaining
The Rangers are 7th with 85 points & 7 games remaining
The Leafs & Canes are tied for 9th with 78 points ..... the Canes have 9 games left though, so that gives them 2 extra games to pick up that point to move ahead of Toronto (all else being equal)
If the leafs win out they will finish with 92 points - that is their ceiling
To pass that TB would need 4 points in their final 9 games, Montreal 6 points in 7 games, Rangers 8 points in 7 games, Buffalo 12 points in 9 games ......... doesn't look too promising, especially since they'd still need to jump the canes ..... however, the season has been a big step in the right direction for them
the sharks had another intense finish last night ... very similar to the vancouver game the other night
down 2-1 they tied it up with a little over 3 minutes remaining as Marleau carried it through the zone and blasted a shot by Quick ...... then thornton picked up an interference penalty and the kings took the lead with around 2 minutes left
the sharks had trouble gaining the zone and getting niemi off the ice ..... with 14 seconds left the puck went off a king and out of play .... setup a faceoff where the sharks gained control, put a shot on Quick and Marleau banged home the rebound with 3 seconds left to tie again
Quick is an absolute beast in the shootouts though and the sharks fell in the 4th round
Still a good point to earn and one that is needed in the ever cramped western conference

Even though the Sharks eventually lost in the shoot out... it was really exciting to watch!
They've had several games lately that have been a lot of fun to watch on TV. These last 7 or so games should be intense.
