Hockey has a racism problem, but its biggest stars remain silent

Let’s rip the Band-Aid off from the top: the silence of white NHL players when it comes to the racism their fellow black hockey players continue to endure is deafening.

On Tuesday, a powerful piece written by former NHL player Akim Aliu was posted to The Players' Tribune, and in it, Aliu details more of the racist abuse he endured from childhood on as he pursued his NHL dream. Aliu wants to see change in hockey, to make “Hockey is for Everyone” more than a catchphrase rolled out for a couple of weeks every year.

I will not mention who that was.

But at any rate at this time the NHL and it's players take the "Hockey Is For Everyone" program very seriously. The HIFE program had taken on new life a few years ago. The league has reached out to minority groups in big ways to grow it's fan base as well as getting youth interested in playing the sport.

And if you think otherwise you are fooling yourselves and don't understand how race is still a factor in the World.
But race isn't supposed to matter... or so they say. It must matter to those people throwing bananas just as the ones who notice the number of blacks in the NBA, but then claim not to notice, but then claim the only blacks working in high-level jobs are there because of Affirmative Action, but then claim they don't notice, but then they notice the suspicious black in their neighborhood, but then they don't notice who is black and who is not, but then... and it just keeps going on and on.

SEIZE THE OPPORTUNITY': Race issues will improve, NHL says

The person is charge of making the NHL more inclusive wants you to know that things are going to get better.

Change is coming, said Kim Davis. And it’s coming soon. The league will be more diverse. There will be black coaches. Black general managers. Even more black players.

“All of that is happening,” said Davis, the NHL’s executive vice-president of social impact, growth initiatives and legislative affairs. “And I’m excited.”
