Excellent article and basically hits the nail on the head as to why Canada cant win at its own national game in the NHL.
Didnt read it all but skimming through it paints a dreary picture for Canadas future success in the sport.
The league doesn't exist to make all the teams happy. Bettman could care less if a Canadian team ever wins again because the fans keep coming back for more regardless. He's banking on hockey catching on in some of the larger American media markets. So far, it's a losing bet. So, no, I don't believe the league would ever go for it.
That said, either Montreal or Calgary need to win a cup soon or my husband and I are going to lose it!!

I think it depends on the end of the economy going back up because hockey is a middle class sport if you look at the demographics.
Interesting read. He obviously put a lot of thought and research into this article. One thing I would add is that it is simply just very hard to build a winner in the NHL, as it is with any major pro league, and it's even more so since the salary cap era began in 2005.

You guys might be waiting a while - neither team looks to a serious contender for the next several years.

In the American Southwest, Texas and Florida, yes. Other than that, no.
I am still for moving the Panthers to Quebec City instead of giving them an expansion team.
As for the west, why not move Phoenix to Portland or Seattle? Then move the Red Wings back to the west?
