Given how popular hockey is in Canada it seems strange that no Canadian team has won the Stanley Cup since 1993. Is the some reason, like currency difference that explains this?

There are more U.S. hockey teams. Players go where they can get the best deals.

The players get drafted by 30 teams. Canada has 6 teams. The talent is spread out more than it used to be. Canada now has a couple of possible contenders so it could happen soon.

^ This (although I thought it was 31 and 7?).

The Canadian players don't just play for Canadian based teams.
And since the teams can be in the same division/conference, this decreases your chances of getting to the Stanley Cup.

That said - two of the top 3 teams with the most Stanley Cups are Canadian.

They are more active NHL players that are Canadian, than any other nationality.

Odd coincidence that Gary Bettman became commissioner of the NHL in 1993 and a Canadian team has never won the cup since.

I’m sorry. You’re correct that it is 31 and 7.

There have been Canadian teams that have made finals

Vancouver (2x), Calgary, Edmonton and Ottawa ... just can’t finish in Finals.

Although Toronto has a good team now and are contenders ..we will see what happens

Concentration of power over the last generation has been in American franchises.. Detroit in the 9os.. Chicago & Pittsburgh over the last decade.

I think it's incidental these recent successes happen to be in the US & not Canada.
