The tally is birthplace per NHL, which isn't necessarily the same as the state where they grew up and developed their craft. WA includes Oshie and Dwyer.
I wish nhl.com would allow you to sort by states and provinces, in addition to nationality.
Paul Gaustad, while he was born in Fargo, ND, he left when he was 4 and started playing hockey around Metro Portland...
Thanks for the great resource. Here's the hit count I have for a 2011 pro search. It includes AHL and KHL, but I kind of like that.

The Canadian provinces of Ontario, Quebec, Alberta, Saskatchewan, British Columbia and Manitoba plus the American states of Minnesota, Michigan, New York and Massachusetts have always been North America's hockey player-producing powerhouses, and I don't see that changing for awhile....
Nor does it surprise me that countries like Canada, the USA, Russia, Finland, Sweden, Czech Republic and Slovakia are the world powerhouses in the game and will probably all be so for a long time to come.
So all in all, both sets of statistics are not much of a surprise.
Didn't the North Stars change their name to just the 'Stars' while still in Minnesota? And the owner claimed that there was nothing to the name change?
I'm not from Minnesota and I didn't like the guy.
The name was changed when he moved to Dallas. One of the major reasons for the move was attendance was falling. He was putting an inferior product on the ice and trying to compete with the University of Minnesota, local colleges and local high schools. Minnesotans like good hockey regardless of what level it is. The University was outdrawing the North Stars because the hockey was much better. So Norm decided to skip town rather than face any competition.
There are hardly any Minnesota players on MA d1 schools are you joking? IS that your argument? There was one kid from Minnesota on BC's national championship team this year and he was a 4th liner who did nothing.. Also The best hs players from MA play prep and they are not ranked with regular high schools so those ratings mean nothing. Nobody plays hs hockey in MA anymore they all play prep and juniors. All Minnesota people do is talk about stupid high school it's a joke.

LOL buck-snort, something must happen to the superior Mass players by the time the Minnesota kids get ready for the pros because there are far more Minnesota born & bred players playing in the pros and far more enshrined in the US HOF than there are from Mass. More than likey your prep schools are stocked with Canadian imports.
Let's not overlook the fact that Massachussetts has a larger population than Minnesota.
I read a statistic somewhere that the MA/NH/ME/VT/RI area produces the least number of professional athletes per capita. Pretty interesting.
