You need a national TV contract for these small market teams to survive and thats just never going to happen.
Realistically speaking we know this will never happen... but for speculation I wanted to know opinions on who could support the next franchise.

Great .....but a lot of "cities" being "speculated" on here have either already been a failure with an NHL team or are too small to support an NHL team.....or BOTH. Lets be realistic.....some of the city names posted couldn't/wouldn't even support an NHL farm club.

LOL please name one city listed that cannot possibly support a farm club. And who are you to know? Also a lot changes in 10 - 15 years to cities such as Hartford, Winniped and QC.. and even more; Kansas City and Cleveland. Using historical facts 2 decades ago doesn't prove that they cannot support a team in TODAY'S time. Yes, it's been established that Quebec City struggled in 1993, and the Cleveland Barons struggled in 1970.. but it's 2009 now!

I wasn't aware that credentials were needed to make a statement of fact here.....but for the record I'm 62 and have been following hockey for 30+ years....half my relatives are Canadian from the Toronto area......that doesn't change the bottom line that Winnipeg, Hartford, Quebec, Cleveland all had NHL teams and failed.....additional talk about New Hampshire, Upstate New York, Halifax and some of the other locations noted for NHL teams are just plain pipe dreams. Plus....theres just not enough nhl caliber players to stock the existing nhl teams let alone more nhl teams. Geeze......Phoenix moved from Winnipeg due to lack of support and finances why on earth would they be any better off moving back there ?

Colorado had the Rockies (Kansas City) and then moved to New Jersey sometime in the late 70s I think. So, I guess they failed but the Avalanche does ok now.

It was more of an issue regarding corperate sponsorships, not of the lack of support. Over 30 thousand fans turned up at a rally to keep the team in Winnipeg. Lack of fan support was not the reason they could not keep the team. Phoenix on the other hand, displayed an impressive 400 fan turn out at their rally, now THAT'S an example of fan support for you!

i would like to see hartford or Winnipeg get their teams back. portland, which Portland? Oregon or Maine. portland Maine is the Sabres farm team. It would also be nice for NY to have another team. If they do, one of the teams in NYC will have to move. Preferably the Islanders.
