I had an alabaster colored baracalounger and it looked like someone died in it when I finally gave it up after 2 years of owning it. It worked and sat fine but I could not get it cleaned. When I tried to spot clean it with renuzit it just made it look worse.
I left it in my house that became the rental. The tenant still uses it and it still looks like hell.
We've had a microfiber couch for a little over 4 years now, so has a dear friend of ours, and we both agree that our couches have not held up well at all. They were supposed to be easy to clean and resist stains and we both found that anything we do to spot clean them makes it worse. We agree we'll never buy microfiber again. But I sure would like to know from people who've had success in cleaning them, what they did.
I don't know much about fabrics, but wanted to mention that my foam cushions have held up better than my down-wrapped ones did. I had assumed that the more expensive would last longer, but the foam has held its shape and is actually more comfortable (in my opinion) than the down. (just something else to consider..)
I agree no leather with a kitty. I have two cats one that is declawed front paws and another that has all 4. The cat with the back claws will leave puncture marks and scratches. I have a leather ottoman and when she jumps off there are marks.
I have a slipcovered sofa in the basement from IKEA that is a duck cloth. Our family room sofa is that micro suede is from Macy's in a darker beige. It doesnt leave hand prints and so forth that I see many micro sofas have. The sofa looks great after 4 yrs. Even our cheap IKEA sofa has held up well too.
When shopping for a couch... gather and pinch the fabric with your fingers.. rub it together and you can deffinetely tell the "grade". I looked at microsuede couches and there were some that when I pinched the fabric and rubbed it together it felt and looked like extremely thin paper... not good for holding up. I mentioned that to the salesperson who THEN mentioned that it was a lower end manufacturer (but priced the same as the higher ends).
If you want it to "last" with growing children and pets... depends on how your children "treat" furniture. As some posters have mentioned - go with a heavy duty tapestry type fabric, they will last longer in your situation.
Denim (or heavy cotton) slipcovers all the way! I love them. A year or so ago, we bought the Ektorp couch from Ikea. It's held up exceptionally well, especially since one of the kids likes to fall asleep there every night! When talking about buying, I told my husband-
Think about it. People seldom get new furniture because the frame is broken or because the item itself has failed. It's usually because the upholstery has been stained/torn/worn out. With a slipcovered piece, it's only a hundred bucks or so for a *new* sofa. And we can change the slipcovers out to update or just for a change of pace as well.
Microfiber attracts and collects animal fur like crazy. I was always vacuuming that couch and I swore that I would never get another microfiber couch with an animal in the house.
