For the first time in my life, I'm in a place with carpet. And I hate it. HATE HATE HATE it (though, I admit it feels good under my toes when I walk around with no socks on...but I digress)....

The carpet is a really dull, depressing gray color and seriously puts a damper on what would otherwise be a really cool apartment. The carpet is wall-to-wall except the beautiful hardwood in the kitchen and bathroom (what I wouldn't give to have the wood continued throughout the apartment).

Does anyone have any ideas on what to do to spruce up carpeted spaces?

Pics would be great.

Thanks

PS: I just moved into the apartment last week and its still largely unfurnished/empty. Maybe seeing this sea of carpet without the furniture is whats really getting to me. Perhaps with more furniture to define the different spaces (its a really open layout) it wouldn't seem as overbearing.

The only thing I can suggest are large area rugs which you may or may not want to spend the money on. Places like Home Goods and Overstock dot come often have really large area rugs that might cover up most of the carpet. I know that when you live in an apartment you are pretty limited as to what you can do - usually nothing permanent. Nice area rugs can be a good investment and you can roll them up and take them with you when you move on.

OP stated it's an apartment, not something they own...
I'd go with furniture and wall decorations of your choice to take the attention away from the carpet.

Invest in a nice rug that will go with your decor. If you take care of rugs they will last a long time and this will let you use it in your next place too.

i have the same problem! im 16 now and we moved house 3 years ago. I was 13 then, and my parents cose my a disgusting pink and BROWN carpet floor because they said that it will be useful when playing 'games'. Now im trying to persuade my parents to change it to normal flooring but they disagree... any ideas how to destroy it 'by mistake' or get rid of it?

You're 16. When you start paying for everything, you'll have a choice. Until then, don't be a brat. Be thankful that you place to come home to.

If you two really hate your carpets but can't replace them, I think your only option is to cover them. Look for new rugs that you love, consider large remnants (they'll bind the edges for you), you might find something great on craigslist, or if you're creative you can make your own original painted canvas rugs which could be lots of fun and look great.
