Charcoal is excellent for absorbing odors.

Also try cat litter!

I think I have found a big culprit - a large window air conditioner - which is getting moved to the basement and covered.

NC_Paddler - what type of charcoal would I use and where would I get it? The more things I can use the better I would feel. Of course July being the worst month in 15 yrs for house sales isn't giving me too much hope - but I would rather be prepared.

Thanks, my parents have done sooo much for me - they mean the world to me. Took me years to realize how important family is. Making up for my childhood/teenage years!!!!

Additional you can place an open container or sheet of air freshener behind every vent cover - the best and least intrusive would be something like "Clean cotton" (same scent in every vent).
You can also buy air freshener it in a bottle, place strip of foam saturated with the fresh scent inside every vent and turn the A/C or "air" on; refill as needed.

Use a very small amount of ammonia in a small dish and leave in a few area's of your home. If you use to much you will smell it.

Nobody has mentioned it yet, so I will. My all time favorite air freshener is coffee grounds. Put fresh grounds in some small bowls and scatter them throughout the house. It will make the house smell better. I use this every time I paint an occupied house, and it does a fantastic job of getting rid of paint odors.

You'll still have to clean well, but to get rid of the ambient odors try the coffee grounds trick.
