If you have a REALLY good eye and can choose rugs that are truly complementary, no problem if they're different. But many of us don't have that skill. (For the same reason we paint a great room like this all one color, rather than using more than one.) Why not the same rug in two different sizes? A square one centered under the chandelier, and a larger rectangle in the living area, would be my choice. The matching designs would tie the areas together, but the variety in shapes/sizes would emphasize the differing functionality of the two areas.
The room is beautiful -- what a view.
Thats what this forum is really all about, to learn how to do all these things!
Update - finally bought the rugs today. Similar (not matching) designs with with approximately the same colors but LR area is mostly red and gold, DR is mostly beige but with some red and gold. I've got my fingers crossed it's going to work - furniture is coming next week so will know then.
Thanks for the compliments on the view - one of main reasons we bought this particular house. We are in the suburban area on a regular subdivision lot but the entire area behind us (extending about 1/2 mile) is undeveloped and hopefully will remain so for a while. It's so nice to have trees again.

I would love to see how the room turns out, post pix, please?
