Most of it isn't, though. And the quality of some previously-good pieces has declined in recent years. I used to recommend the Billy bookcase to people all the time. Now I think it's very overpriced for what it is and I hate how they charge different prices for different finishes. It's total BS. You can get something of equal (i.e. low) quality at Target or Wal-Mart for less money.

There are some good deals to be had there but there's also a lot of garbage. I am planning to buy some things from there soon but I have looked at them in the store, beat on the floor models, and read lots of reviews on the web about these specific pieces (the reviews were all positive about those specific pieces).

The Billy used to be fastened through the side panels ... for several years already, they're cam-lock fasteners. No exposed screw head, but not as much strength either.

Different prices ... that's simple - wood veneer costs more than vinyl laminate.

The prices differences did not used to be so dramatic. The espresso finish one costs nearly twice what the white one does. I refuse to believe that that is in any way justified.

All finishes should cost the same amount.

That's like saying all cars of the same model should cost the same, even though one is a 4-cylinder and the other is a V6.

Wood veneer is actual wood (that's sliced very thinly) and applied over other materials. It does cost more.

And I just checked the standard shelves ... white, black, and other vinyl laminated are $59.99. Wood veneered ones are $69.99. Ten bucks difference.

Actually I paid $35 for the white ones just a few weeks ago. So....
