Well, I certainly wouldn't push everything up against the walls.

I would start by centering the TV against the wall with the big chair, under the big cross. I would then bring in some color with a rug, use some of that color from the rug on the walls, place the couch parallel to the TV...and go from there.

Not a lot of natural light in that room based on the photos. Thus, I would make sure to not go too dark on the paint or you could end up looking very dark in there. Personally, I think you should play off the white since the floors is such a stark feature in the room. Go with a nice natural rug (thinking seagrass, jute, etc). Then have one unifying bright color (e.g. yellow, turquiose, apple green) and use various tones of that color in your accents and acessories; I'm picturing large white and yellow print fabrics with some striped fabrics and various textures. Great fabrics can really make a room and are much easier to change than furniture if you want to change the feel and style of the room. Also, please, I beg of you, do not line your furniture up against the walls like you preparing for the school dance. Make conversational areas. That will immediately lend to warmth factor if nothing else.

I'd be embarrassed to post a photo of my crummy apartment living room. And all that I have would fit in one corner of that big white-tiled room! Maybe I need to buy more. Goody, shopping .

What color is your sofa, chairs?
Sofa and chairs are kind of beige. Accents currently are burgundy and cream. Not very bright and cheerful. I need bright and cheerful.

It looks like a dance hall with the carpet in the middle and the furniture pushed up against the walls like that.

It's a big room. You need to arrange your furniture in the middle of the room.

These pictures should give you an idea of how to group furniture in the middle of a room:
