I am giving the basement over to my 16 yr old son for his bedroom. But I'm at a loss as to how to decorate it. He's into sports(soccer, baseball, and basketball) and seriously into video games. I want it not just to be a bedroom but a place he can hang out with his friends.
The space isn't huge-about 16 feet wide by 18 feet long. There is a nook where his bed will fit. Other than that, he has a desk, a tv, a tv stand, a bookcase, video game stuff etc. Most of his furniture is black so I'd like to add some color down there. Also, lighting is important as there's only 1 small window in thhe room. Anyone have somee amazing ideas?

A friend of mines family owns a kitchen design company. When the younger brother was being moved into the basement they wanted it done to suit his needs and tastes, but also go with the rest of the house. Their space was a little bigger than yours, but their general idea would probably work.

The first thing they did was divided the room into two sections. One area was for sleeping/studying and this is where they put his bed and desk. The second area they used as an entertaining space for when he had friends over. They put a couch in the middle of the room to divide the two areas and set it up facing the TV with a coffee table in front of the couch. They used two different area rugs to identify the spaces and add a splash of color.

As for lighting, they had overhead lighting already in the basement, so that was the main lighting. However, they did do one really cool trick. They got movie, video game and sports posters of the sons choosing and placed them in cheap frames spaced out along the walls in the room. They then put in lights along the edges of the room that shined down on the posters. Think of the hallway in a movie theater. This allowed him to turn off the main fluorescent lights that were really bright and have an ambient light effect that was perfect for games, TV and movies. The nice thing of using posters and cheap frames was that he could easily change them out. The posters also added a lot of color and style and brought his taste into the room, while having them in frames and lit kept it from looking like he just tacked posters all over the wall.

Ask him what colors he likes, and move on from there.

Throw a lot of pillows and bean bag chairs around so he and his friends can move the seating easily as they play games, goof off, and hang out.

Get him some lamps and/or floor can lights so he can either brighten up the room, or leave it dim for watching TV.

Lots of shelves!

Check your building codes because most towns do not allow a basement bedroom without a legal egress window. Besides that, do you really want your child in a room where he can't easily get out if needed?

As far as the decor goes, have HIM pick it out.

The basement does have a legal size window in it...so he couldd get out if he needed to Thanks so much for all the suggestions. He's decided on the colors black, grey, and red. Good thing that most of his furniture is black already!
