Mostly I buy used... but not upholstered stuff.

Right now I'm looking for some living room items like a sofa or loveseat but mostly I'm focused on getting as good a recliner I can get for a fair price.

I'm looking for good objective information on what makes one recliner chair worth (or sell for) $X and another one for twice as much... and how to see that when in the store (aside from the store name).

Thanks.

Anything you can add about leather gets you extra points.

The more expensive the leather, the easier it scratches!

Actually, analine process is the most expensive, and its the surface finish, not the price, that the leather is done in that determines the scratch factor.

LOL, I was making a joke. But you said it precisely. Analine-died leather is the most expensive...and it scratches like crazy!

Things to look for ... what's the frame made of? Hardwood is the best, then pine or other softwoods, then plywood. Low on the list would be particle board and plastics.

Is it a good fit? Comfort, ease of reclining function, cushion length, and leg rest all matter.

Leather ... full grain is the best, as it's 100% of the leather. Then top grain, which is the surface portion of the leather. Split leather is the inner portion of the leather, and is much weaker. Worst is what's sold as bicast leather ... read more about that here.

Analine dyed leather is the same color all the way through as opposed to the cheaper leather tanning proccess that only paints the top surface of the hide leaving the rest of the hide the post-tanning light gray color. So if you have a finsh on leather that doesn't scatch easily it's probably a special paint that is hard and brittle. What's point of having real leather?

Stay away from "bonded leather" this is the particle board of leather and it rots quickly.

Make sure the frame is solid hardwood. Many cheaper frames for upholstered furniture are made from Medium Density Fibreboard or particle board.
