We're buying a new house and doing a lot of remodeling. I'm trying to decide on hardware for the entire home. Our floors are going to be dark walnut. Our cabinets are going to be light birch/maple. Countertops dark. I really like the look of black hardware, but we're also leaning heavily toward a black front door. Decisions, decisions!

I also wonder if black hardware is more "new" and therefore less likely to go out of style as quickly. My second choice is brushed nickel.

Thoughts?

I wouldn't think it'd have to be the same in the whole house but probably should be sort of the same style.

guess my preference would be the brushed nickel-goes with almost anything. But then I'm not into black.

No not at all, the kitchen should be different from the bathroom and other areas, more unique if you have dsifferent hardware, who wants the same hardware anyways, thruout the whole house.

My kitchen hardware is much different then in my bathrooms, i want it different, don't want the kitchen and the bathrooms to be the same, but different.

But saying this, you can keep to the same style that you like, but a different look for the different rooms, you can even keep the same color, but different variations.

Hardware does not have to match in the kitchens and baths. I quite often sell a kitchen in one wood species and color and they do the bath or baths in something completely different.

Black hardware has always been around. I like it and it has never gone out of style in the 3 decades I been selling it. It's always a good seller. The most popular hardware today is stainless or brushed nickle. I still sell blackout nickle.

Before all those who hate what I said start yelling, again I stated what is most popular. If you don't like it then yell at your neighbors. I don't start trends. I just provide what the people want.

A bow or bar handle is by far the best seller with a basket weave type design quite popular too but the basket weave is more popular in black. The blackout nickle is not popular in handles but is popular in knobs. Strange huh? Don't shoot the messenger.

Desertsun, I like your suggestions especially on a light maple cabinet wood! I bet it would look really classy!

I think you should go with what you think looks best in your kitchen. A friend custom-made all my kitchen cabinets and put brushed-nickel knobs on them. They looked lovely -- but then I had granite countertops/backsplashes installed and bought matching granite knobs online to use on the cabinets instead of the brushed nickel. I think it looks great and I dont care what anyone else thinks.
