Looking at old family photos brought this to mind. What are some 70s decorating things you remember or are embarrassed you thought was cool? Uncle had a large cable spool. He wrapped it in shag carpet, left holes in the center and sides, and used it like the kids on That 70s Show. That way they won't have far to fall when laughing up a storm or just can stand up any more. Then there was the red globe "swag lamp"(mom told me that's what it was called). I use to have a black velvet painting of Gene Simmons of Kiss. I was a kid into rock. Then there were all the decorative ashtrays throughout every house in the country. Some were works of art,...some were soda bottles.

Hippie beads hanging in place of doors.
Psychedelic wall paper.
Black strobe lights.
Gold/rust shag carpet. Green steel cabinets in the kitchen with the same steel countertops.

Giant bean bags rather then chairs and sofas
Smile stickers and decals everywhere
Bra burning poster on the wall
Dirty Harry poster on the wall
Charlies Angles poster on the wall

Melanie (The Good Book) poster on the wall (and I still love her)
Everything had a peace sign on it
Closet with bell bottom pants, silk shirts, tie dyed T-shirts
Phonograph always playing scratchy records with Dad always yelling how loud it is.

You can all our culture and our taste in decor and clothing from the 70s bad but it was the greatest generation that ever existed. Ever! If I could turn back time and leave it there for awhile I might go back a few more years to the late 60s minus the Vietnam war.

My parents had metal ducks hanging on the living room wall and one night when I had gone out to a dance, someone "slipped" me something like angel dust, I guess. When I got home and went into the living room...the ducks started flying around. LOL. It was NOT funny at the time, as I hid it from my Mom. To this day I have no idea how, because I was Stoned, but now it's funny.

LOL! My Mom used to jiggle the "wooden spoon drawer" and we would go running away as fast as we could.

Not just peace signs, but ecology symbols too. Owls. Didn't everyone have some owl decor. Peter Max inspired prints carried over from the 60's. Foil wallpaper. Paneling. We had olive green tinted paneling in our family room. Plastic in new places, like chairs and lamps.

edited to add: How could I forget the gold/green crushed velvet upholstery!
