We are having our stairway to the upstairs level redone to match the lower level cherry color. I'm wondering what color to paint the risers. I googled some images and they are 99% painted white. We have alot of black accents in the house- -do you think black would look OK with cherry stained stair treads? any thoughts on any other color choice? It's easy enough to repaint if I don't like whatever we choose.
I don't care for the white myself, so we painted them as close to the oak wood tone as we could get and then added a brown stain with a comb to look like wood grain. The idea was to have it blend with our oak floors as opposed to stand out.
I would buy some black Contact paper and cut a few risers out and see if you like it.
I never understood why people put in painted risers with finished-wood treads. The incremental cost of having the risers match the treads when installing a staircase is minor. Hopefully they properly placed the rabbett/dado joints and routed the skirtboards.

My risers are the same oak as my treads.

We had the floors sanded but the risers are too short for a proper sander to get into and a hand sanding was not going to do the job we needed since the floors had been sealed for over 50 years. We has several estimates before we did the job and everyone of them told us the same thing, they would never look as good as the treads. So we opted for the paint/stain.

My parents just had their floors re finished and she was also having the problem with the risers, as she was told by the floor men they do not sand them.
A few of her neighbors have them white, but I don't think with her decor, since everything is off whit, beige or whatever that color is, the white would stick out. i suggested a dark brown. But she painted them white anyway...... ***sigh***
I don't like the way it looks because nothing else in her house is white....
Besides white risers get kick marks and scuff marks every time someone goes up the stirs.
I think the black like the poster said would also look good with the cherry wood stairs.
but I do think they should be stained exactly like the floors and stairs, i dont see why it can't get done.
