I have learned that the mater bedroom on the main floor is more prevalent in different parts of the country than others. We prefer it and would never buy a house without the master or at least a nice bedroom/full bath on the main floor BECAUSE as you get older /have surgery/parents who may live with you --- all need to be on the main level. It really is just preferance. We had our child upstairs and believe me, I could hear her and be there when needed.

I probably would not buy a house where the master was upstairs and the kids' rooms were on the main level. I don't worry so much about teens getting out, etc. vs wanting to be able to use the living areas after kids have gone to bed, etc. It would depend on the overall layout of the house though.

I wouldn't like it for fire safety, i want my children with me, not on a seperate floor,
i couldn't sleep if the kids were downstairs and i was up, or vice versa.
No not for me.

In our house, the master is on the same level as the laundry, kitchen, dining, and main living area. The laundry is near the kitchen and master bedroom. That was less convenient when the children lived at home, because their laundry had to be brought upstairs.

Most of the plans I see advertised that split the bedrooms have the master on the main floor.

Our current home has this layout. It was a three bedroom/2 bath ranch that was expanded by the previous owner. So we have two average sized bedrooms, a full hall bath, a larger former master bedroom with attached bathroom on the main floor. the upstairs addition has a large master bed/ bath, small bedroom that would make a perfect nursery but we use it as an exercise room and a loft that is my office/ craft room.
When we bought this house our kids were 16 and 10. It was great having a little privacy and they loved being closer to the kitchen and the basement tv room when they had friends over. Now that they are grown and we live alone the house is really too big but the floorpan still works. We entertain a lot and it's nice having the entire upstairs to ourselves when we have house guests.
The house is alarmed and we always had dogs so safety was never a concern with the layout. As for the sneaking out, they would have had to disarm the alarm which would beep on the keypad in our room.
