Hi there,
Was told somewhere around 7500 dollars for my whole house to have every flooring but the bathrooms redone. House is 2000sqft... llike 1700 sqft of it would be either re-carpeted and the kitchen would have wood put down.

I'm a single guy, have lot of time on my hands..wondering if I can really save a ton of money doing it myself.......or would it just be worth it to throw down the $$..

Planning on selling the place in 5 or so years. Should I really care about all these warranties that the various carpets offer?

Empire gave me an estimate 3 times higher than the carpet company I used. I told the guy doing my carpet the price Empire gave me. He said he could have given me the top of the line carpet and padding and still couldn't justify coming anywhere near the Empire price.

If you are truly handy I would say do it yourself. I once got a quote from Empire and they too came back high. I went to a local carpet shop and got it for almost 60% off of the quote that Empire gave me which included padding and installation.

Then we moved into our new home and wanted wood flooring in our living room and hallway area. We got quotes from other places ranging from $4500-7500. There was no way we could afford it. My husband then went to a flooring depot, found the same wood and got it for just slight over $2000 and he installed it himself. BIG DIFFERENCE.

Seems like it would be hard to do carpet on your own. Hard floor on the other hand, that makes sense. I have vague plans to try such a thing in my own house.

If you only got one quote get some more though.

From my experience Empire was always really high. Shop around. Laying carpet does require some skill and tools. As handy as hubby and I are, we only carpeted one room that was on the small side. I wouldn't fool it with otherwise. Check out smaller businesses for estimates.

Regarding carpet.....If you want a professional looking job, you should hire professional carpet installers. Look at and call some of the carpet buying groups like Abbey Carpet, Carpet One, etc. The estimates should be free. Empire's prices are pretty inflated. Caveat Emptor here.

The main reason is that it takes professional tools like a power stretcher to install carpet properly. Yes, you can rent them, but rental tools are not in the best of shape, and unless you can get your installation done in one day, it'll get expensive.

Installing hardwood floors is a little easier. Take your time, read the directions, measure twice/cut once, and make sure the base molding and quarter-round molding looks great. Nothing is worse than a brand new wood floor made to look crappy by shoddy trim work.

Good luck!
