We have worked very hard on repairing our beach cottage and I now want to give it a name. I love seeing all the different cottage names and we want to name ours. What would be the best way to make a sign? It will be covered by the front porch. i was thinking wood but am not confident in my ability to print the name free hand on it. Could stencil it but want to make sure it is visible from the street. Any suggestions?

If you are not confident about the lettering, go to Etsy and have someone design some vinyl lettering for you. There is a wide array of choices.
I agree with FW, its not a lot of money to have one made that is nice and you won't spend hours of time trying to figure out how to do it. If you are determined to DIY, You can make your own stencil.
Get a board that you like, in the shape you want.
Using a paint application such as Photoshop or Coreldraw, create a page the size of the board. If you don't have a paint app, use MS Word. Setup the text the way you want it painted on the board. You can download fonts you like from the web.
If your sign is larger than your printer will print, you will need to split up the text into parts so you can print it out. Print out the individual words on a somewhat heavy cardstock (kinkos can do this if your printer cannot).
Cut out the lettering with good scissors or an exacto knife
Sketch the outlined letters onto the board and paint.
Thanks for the suggestions I did check the signs on Esty and they are nice but with shipping it would probably be close to $50.00 I was hoping to spend under $20.00 Also I kind of wanted a more whimsical design. We are going to name it "Float On"
so I wanted a design that goes with the fun of the name. If that makes sense. I liked your ideas falling water about making a stencil, this I could do. I'm going to enlist my daughters to help out while we are on vacation at the beach cottage next week!
