I am a renter...living in a spartan apartment. My computer (mac mini) is in the bedroom, along with an IKEA desk.
I just purchased the Pottery Barn Orchid Duvet cover and shams (finally trying to get some decent bedding), and I wanted to build upon that. I have a table from Bombay beside the bed currently.

I'm looking for general ideas on how to decorate knowing that generally speaking I like the idea of a monochromatic space (I'm not afraid of color...just sparing use of it is ok), a feminine space that echoes the past (I love history) without coming off as too dated.

Here is the duvet that is a big part of the room right now...

And I've been looking at mixing black and white photography on the walls with a dash of 19th century romanticism.or

Not sure if I am on the right track or not.

You're definitely on the right track.

You have an eye for simple elegance. Keep doing what you're doing.

I really enjoyed seeing your ideas. Very refreshing!

You've got IT!

Thanks. Like I said I don't want to look too old fashioned (I'm 37 and single..and a scifi geek!) but I want my bedroom to look like the bedroom of a sophisticated intellectual with some sense of style. (Sounds easy but its HARDER than it sounds!)

Very pretty bedding. For the wall art, I'd recommend matting smaller B & W photos large. I'd prefer sepia tones with your bedding, though. If you are using B & W, then consider larger tan mats with black frames.

The rest of your bedroom decor should be having a conversation with your bedding, since that is your inspiration.

You might search for older pieces for the rest of your furniture, or at least, add one or two vintage pieces mixed with newer. You could certainly put vintage lamps in your room. Bronze or dull brass tones would be nice. Make sure to have a little black in there--picture frames, small furniture piece, pillow, whatever.

You can also pick your favorite outfit and hang it on a nice hanger and place it somewhere in your room, it will constantly give you the feeling your going somewhere nice and you can use your clothes for decoration.
