I think there is a trend towards colored ceilings, and I wonder if there are any guidelines anyone is aware of for doing this. Should they be lighter or darker than the walls? Or when would you put a totally different color on the ceiling?

People have done colored ceilings for years but it certainly is not mainstream. Lighter colors are usually used as darker ones can add to the perception of a lower and confining ceiling.

Imo colored ceilings can be a good thing. I can't stand it when I walk into a room with hello red walls and a white ceiling, far too much of a contrast for me. Even if the person didn't want "color" they should have put a darker off white up there. Personally a golden biscuit colored ceiling would be nice with red walls. In my bedroom I choose a gold and put a lighter color from the same chip on the ceiling (I have 8ft ceilings and lighter makes them look taller). The kitchen is brown and med. green with the ceiling painted the same green as the walls. I'm not knocking the non-color school, I used a nice pale off white on some of the ceilings in the house along with the green in the kitchen. It looks very nice, it's just when someone uses a bold color they should "soften" it by making the ceiling coordinate. Just my opinion : )

All the ceilings in my home are painted to match the walls (not same color as walls). it ended up that all the ceilings are painted different shades of beige except the bathroom and one other room which have white ceilings. My office ceiling is supposed to be a pale blue but it's so pale it looks white (not happy with color selection).

We have colored ceilings too. They are for the most part a couple shades down the paint chip strip from the wall color. I LOVE the look and get a lot of compliments on how cozy the room looks. When we painted our TV room we didn't feel like doing the ceiling so that is white and it doesn't look finished. We should have painted that a light yellow, but again, we just didn't feel like it and it isn't a room where company goes so we probably won't ever do it.

Ok, so general concensus is a few shades lighter than the wall color works good, unless it's a really bold color. I was at a B&B once and my room was very dark royal blue-walls and ceiling- and the furnishings were same color blue and white. This looked really good, but I doubt I would have the nerve to try anything this bold. The walls and ceiling were both glassy smooth plaster. I wonder if their having the same texture was important to the fact it worked?

One thing to note......when we were house hunting we loved a house but we were so put off by the paint.....the walls were painted to look, I guess, faux Tuscany.....and the homeowners had the celings done the same way!!!! It was in the living room, dining room, family room, kitchen, and eating area......way too over powering. It really put us off and each time we went back to look, even though it was only paint, it was so over welming that it effected the whole house.

I have a small powder room with a 9 ft. ceiling.I painted the walls cream, then painted the ceiling a very, very dark brown.I think it looks very cool.It almost makes it look like there is no ceiling, like it's an endless night sky.Even my husband likes it and he is generally not a fan of colored ceilings.

That sounds awesome. I love ballsy decorating. I'm so tired of bland and whimpy.
