Uncarpeted wooden floors were out of favor for quite some time. Women of my mom's generation -- now in their 70s and 80s -- and older couldn't wait to cover up the floors with wall-to-wall carpet because, to them, vacuuming a carpet was much easier than cleaning, waxing, buffing and waxing hardwood.
This is absolutely so true. In my parents new home (circa) 1964, brand new wood floors, all the neighbors had them. Every single neighbor then had wall to wall installed, immediately......
It was considered "poor" to have wood floors exposed. Moving to Staten Island from Brooklyn was considered a step up in life, you were not going to have wood floors like in the tenements...
Now some 50 years later everyone has since ripped up their carpeting and have the wood floors......
go figure....
Yikes, I am a little off topic, but no one had granite, ever, and no one seemed to mind...yet women still cooked the same way then as they do now, only with granite.
But the wood floors of past generations are not the wood floors of today....now we have finished wood floors that require little more than a vacuum and occasional wipe down...our last house had 95% 50 year old wooden floors and they were a breeze to keep clean and to clean under the beds took a few minutes. I miss having nearly all hardwood floors...now we have about 20% hardwoods and very nice carpeting - with just the 2 of us in the house, they stay quite clean.
I think granite will always be a popular option, but there are a lot of other fun materials out there. There are so many different options that weren't available even ten years ago but some of them may be "trendy". Icestone, Richlite, Copper, Concrete, Volvic lava, Quartz, Silestone, & Vetrazzo are all being used to create some cool looks. But I think granite is a classic and isn't going anywhere. We just have more to choose from.
sure it will: just like we all thought, for years tile would be the choice for everyone, forever. No, it will to out, how soon, who knows. We are finally getting closer to redoing our kitchen counter tops, backsplash and raising our ceiling, as well as other updating. I do not think we will go with granite. What we will use, I don't know. it is still about 6 months before we will begin the work, so we have time to decide.
