Hi everyone,

I am trying to choose pillows to liven up and freshen my new home. One couch is a light khaki/olive green, and the other is a light grey. There is a rug on the floor which is a light blue and darker grey. I would like to add some colour into the house using dcorative throw pillows but I am having trouble finding colors to suit. I have other little splashes of color around - pink pots, colored coasters, and am getting a canvas for the wall with a lot of blue in it.

Does anyone have ideas that could help freshen up this room? I am in a very modern apartment (it was partially furnished and I don't really like the olivey green couch!)

Pick something with a bold pattern, like a chevron or diamond, in a bright blue or something to pull colors from other items in the room. West Elm has a few options:

The handblock ink rhombus pillow cover, Allegra Hicks lucky eye pillow, or Kantha chevron might work.

Wherever you go to get pillows, pick one of each style you like, buy them to try out, keep the receipt, and return what you don't like or what doesn't work in your room. Sometimes it takes multiple trips and/or multiple stores to find what works, be patient. Also, check out CB2 for pillows as well.

Have you considered slipcovers? You could totally change the color scheme quite easily.

you can always change colors if you make some extra pillow covers from shop bought fabric and if you yourself do not sew maybe family or friend or neighbour could do this for you

peach/orangy tones maybe or some Asian fabric see places like Quilt fabric, fashion fabrics for the discriminating artist from eQuilter.com! qulting cotton fabric can be sewn into pillow covers

for home decorating advice and lots of nice ideas see www.bhg.com/decorating/

I like light blue with olive green, or aqua, and either should go with the gray sofa as well.

The February Better Homes and Gardens has several articles about adding color into neutral rooms. You might have a look at it for inspiration.

That's what I do - I bought some really nice oversize Ralph Lauren throw pilows at Marshalls and change - they were a great price for down pillows, I think about $30 bucks. The covers that came with them are lovely for fall, I then bought some slip-covers thru Pottery Barn for spring/summer (on clearence!)

I would shop in places like Home Goods and Marshall's etc for pillows that I like and that I think would look good....get twice as many as you need, and then take back the ones that don't work. You may be able to hone in on the right look this way.

Orange tones like melon, persimmon and pumpkin work well as an accent with all of the base colors you have mentioned.

Bed Bath & Beyond sells inexpensive covers for standard square throw pillows. This is a quick way to change out looks if you already have that sized pillow.
