Hello all, so sorry for the delay, sadly I'm not online each day, though I'd love to be!!
I read through everyone's comments carefully, alot to think about. I didn't realize the four inch extension was considered a backsplash. Hmmm, interesting. The core purpose of putting something up between the counter and the cabinets is utility. I don't know if we are just messy kitchen people, or what, but we do get the paint very dirty with flecks of oils, water, etc. I geuss we just "live hard" in the kitchen and the paint has taken a battering.
Gloss will clean up easy, but 2 things to consider... paint brand and the drywall has to be perfect, otherwise it will show every bump, divot and scratch through the paint.
Kayanne, I love your suggestion of metal tiles! Metals just seem to work with everything. Have you used them before? Do they get "streaky" when you clean them??
No, I've not had metal tiles, but I have loved ones I've seen in other people's homes and in magazines. If they were stainless then I guess they'd be as easy to care for as stainless appliances (and with Weiman Stainless Polish they always look beautiful!).
Before I would have metal tiles (or any product actually) installed in my home, I would take one or two home and put them to the test: splash some vinegar, cooking grease, etc.; trying cleaning with various products, see how the tiles do.
My kids used to love "testing" things for me---"Here boys, take these floor tiles and drop some canned vegetables on them. Try scratching them up with a fork. Scuff your shoes all over them."
