I once saw some metallic pewter/silver grasscloth wallpaper in the lobby of a very nice hotel, and I loved the way it looked. It had some nice texture and a subtle metallic sheen. Very classy and luxurious.

I have a big support column in my living room and I'd love to cover it with something similar. I've been looking, but the only wallpaper I can find that's similar to what I remember would cost me a small fortune due to the minimum order size - over $600. I really don't want to spend that much for such a small surface area.

Has anyone ever tried to paint grasscloth, and did you get good results? I'm wondering if I could hang the paper and then rub it with a metallic paint. Or would the fact it would be on a column cause the paint to crack?

Alternately, if anyone has ever seen any metallic grasscloth or similarly textured wallpapers, if you can point me towards any, I'd appreciate it.

It might not hurt to purchase a smallish piece of grasscloth and a couple kinds of metallic paint (perhaps a spray paint and a brush-on) and run some tests. You could paint some swatches and see what happens when you bend them to the curve of the column, and maybe pre-bend some and apply the paint to see the result.

Whatever you do, come back and let us know what you did, and how it turned out!

That sounds cool. Have you tried contacting the hotel? I was thinking of doing grasscloth wallpaper in my dining room and I really like that idea. Please post if you find out where it came from.
